Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was the victim of a purse snatching incident while dining in a downtown Washington, D.C., restaurant on Sunday evening, as confirmed by two law enforcement sources to Finance Newso.
The stolen purse contained approximately $3,000 in cash, which Noem had withdrawn to treat her family to dinner, along with Easter gifts and activities, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security reported on Monday.
Additional items in the bag included Noem’s passport, personal makeup, blank checks, her driver’s license, keys, and medication, according to CNN, the first outlet to break the news of the theft.
The U.S. Secret Service has begun examining security footage, which reportedly shows an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask stealing the bag, as detailed by CNN.
During an appearance at the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday morning, Noem acknowledged the theft, stating that the matter has “not resolved yet.”
In an interview with NBC News, she indicated that while the Secret Service is aware of the situation, they have not yet had a direct conversation about it.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed to Finance Newso that the agency is in the process of gathering further details regarding the incident.
