Netflix has announced a comprehensive redesign of its homepage, aimed at enhancing the user experience for members seeking shows and movies.

This overhaul will extend beyond traditional viewing methods, introducing a vertical video feed designed to better accommodate mobile users. Additionally, Netflix is investigating the incorporation of generative artificial intelligence into its platform, collaborating with OpenAI to enhance functionality.

The revamped features will include prominently displayed shortcuts for content discovery and real-time recommendations that are tailored to the viewer’s immediate mood and preferences, as stated in a company news release.

These updates are set to roll out to Netflix subscribers worldwide over the coming months.

This significant enhancement to the Netflix user interface aims to facilitate easier content discovery within the platform’s vast library of series and films, particularly as competition in the streaming sector intensifies. Rivals such as Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and Disney’s streaming services are striving for growth in revenue and profitability by attracting new subscribers and retaining existing ones.

In response to a brief slowdown in customer growth during 2022, Netflix implemented a series of strategic changes, including the introduction of a lower-cost, ad-supported subscription tier and measures to curb password sharing.

Following these adjustments, Netflix has seen an uptick in new memberships. As of January, the platform reported a total of 300 million paid subscribers, marking a significant increase of 19 million over the previous quarter.

Although the company has ceased reporting quarterly subscriber figures starting in the first fiscal quarter of 2025, it did report a 13% increase in revenue during the same timeframe.

While Netflix has made several updates to enhance the user experience in recent years, this represents its most substantial redesign in quite some time.

The anticipated TikTok-style vertical video feed will enable users to save and share clips seamlessly with friends.

“We recognize that swiping through a vertical feed on social media platforms is an effective way to navigate video content, and our members appreciate browsing clips and trailers to discover their next favorite show,” explained Netflix Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim during a recent media presentation.

Furthermore, the upcoming AI enhancements will allow users to input specific phrases when searching for desired content, as detailed by Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone. These new features are being developed in partnership with OpenAI, with Netflix’s team adapting the models to align with user needs.

With this update, Netflix is committed to placing all relevant information front and center, empowering members to make informed viewing choices, as Kim emphasized during her interaction with reporters.

“Our members often engage in significant scrolling and navigation to find what they want, transitioning between rows and title details on the homepage,” Kim added.
