The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors announced on Friday that former Waste Management CEO David Steiner has been appointed as the new postmaster general.
David Steiner, who is currently a board member at FedEx, will take over from Louis DeJoy, who resigned in March, and Doug Tulino, who has been serving as the acting postmaster general.
Steiner is slated to officially begin his role with the USPS in July and will step down from his position on FedEx’s board, which he has held since 2009.
The USPS has faced financial challenges, reporting a net loss of $9.5 billion for the fiscal year 2024.
Commenting on his appointment, Steiner expressed, “It is an incredible honor to be asked to lead the world’s greatest postal organization, with a history that stretches back before the founding of the United States.” He emphasized his admiration for the public service aspect of the USPS and his commitment to its position as an independent establishment within the executive branch.
Steiner served as the CEO of Waste Management from 2004 until late 2016, during which time he was recognized for implementing significant organizational changes that improved operations, culture, and financial performance.
Amber McReynolds, Chair of the USPS Board of Governors, remarked in a statement, “Dave is the right person to lead the Postal Service at this time to ensure this magnificent and historic organization thrives into the future.” She highlighted Steiner’s leadership qualities and his expansive vision and skills.
Frederick Smith, founder and executive chairman of FedEx, praised Steiner, noting that his “sharp business acumen will be key to addressing the significant challenges facing the United States Postal Service,” which has struggled with losses exceeding $108 billion since 2007, despite receiving billions in taxpayer relief.
