India and Pakistan have reached an agreement for an immediate ceasefire, announced President Donald Trump on Saturday. This development follows days of escalating tensions and clashes between the two countries.
“After extensive discussions engaged by the United States, I am happy to report that India and Pakistan have consented to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
Confirmations regarding the ceasefire were also made by leaders from both Pakistan and India.
The announcement came shortly after operations and hostilities escalated between the two nations earlier in the day, marking a continued cycle of military actions.
As violence persisted for several days, international leaders urged both nuclear-armed neighbors to engage in dialogue aimed at alleviating the building tensions.
“Pakistan has consistently pursued peace and security in the region while firmly upholding its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” tweeted Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on X.
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the ceasefire’s validity, asserting, “India has maintained an unwavering and resolute position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”
Jaishankar reiterated, “India will continue this commitment,” stating this on X.
The ceasefire is set to take effect at 5 PM local time, as noted by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the two nations are set to “initiate discussions on a broad range of issues at a neutral venue.”
Rubio revealed that Vice President JD Vance had conducted meetings with both Indian and Pakistani leaders over the preceding two days.
The Secretary of State commended the prime ministers of both nations for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in opting for the path of peace.”
