Britain is collaborating with the United States to solidify a lasting ceasefire between India and Pakistan, while promoting “confidence-building measures” and encouraging dialogue between the two nations, according to Foreign Minister David Lammy’s remarks on Saturday.
During his two-day visit to Islamabad, Lammy stated, “We will continue to work with the United States to ensure that we get an enduring ceasefire, to ensure that dialogue is happening and to work through with Pakistan and India how we can get to confidence and confidence-building measures between the two sides,” as reported by Reuters.
The two nuclear powers agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, which came amidst some of the most intense fighting they have seen in nearly three decades, ignited by a lethal attack on tourists that India attributes to Pakistan. Islamabad has denied any connection to the attack.
Regarding India’s recent halt of the Indus Water Treaty, which may affect Pakistan’s water resources, Lammy urged, “We would urge all sides to meet their treaty obligations.”
Pakistan has indicated that the collective efforts of the UK and other nations, alongside the U.S., have been instrumental in de-escalating tensions. However, diplomats and analysts caution that the ceasefire remains in a delicate state.
