A senior White House official informed Finance Newso on Monday that President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are anticipated to hold a conversation within the week.
This forthcoming dialogue is set against a backdrop of rising tensions between the United States and China, which could potentially jeopardize the fragile trade agreement both nations had reached just weeks prior.
The two leaders might engage in a one-on-one discussion “very soon,” although it is unlikely to occur today, according to the official, who opted to remain anonymous.
U.S. market indexes began the week on a downward trajectory as investors reacted to the increasingly adversarial exchanges between Washington and Beijing.
The trade relationship between the two countries, which rely heavily on mutual commerce, experienced significant disruption in April when Trump imposed extensive tariffs on Chinese imports, raising them to 145%. In retaliation, China implemented steep tariffs of its own. Following initial trade negotiations in Switzerland in mid-May, both sides agreed to reduce most of these tariffs for 90 days.
However, subsequent accusations have emerged from both nations, each claiming the other has failed to uphold the agreements made in Geneva.
In recent weeks, the Trump administration has charged China with delaying the export of vital minerals to the United States, while Beijing has retaliated by criticizing Washington for issuing warnings concerning the use of Chinese semiconductor chips.
Officials from the Trump administration have conceded that advancements in U.S.-China trade negotiations have stalled. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted last Thursday that resolving the impasse would “require both leaders to weigh in with each other.”
Frustration has been voiced by Trump regarding China’s emergence of new obstacles in the negotiations.
In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump stated, “China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US.”
He further expressed, “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
