On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a request with a federal court seeking an immediate injunction against the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles, aimed at addressing protests centered on immigration raids.
State Attorney General Rob Bonta urged the presiding judge to issue a temporary restraining order that would prevent President Donald Trump’s actions from taking effect by 1 p.m. PT, asserting that such measures are necessary to “prevent immediate and irreparable harm to Plaintiffs.”
Bonta argued that without prompt judicial intervention, the military presence in the streets—deployed under Trump’s orders—poses “imminent harm to State Sovereignty, deprives the State of vital resources, escalates tensions and promotes (rather than quells) civil unrest.” These statements were made before Judge Charles Breyer in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
“Donald Trump is acting like a tyrant, not a President,” he continued, appealing to the court for swift action to block what he described as unlawful actions.
