Rolls-Royce, the British aerospace and defense manufacturer, has committed to a $75 million investment to enhance its engine manufacturing facility located in Aiken, South Carolina.
This strategic investment aims to increase the production of mtu Series 4000 diesel engines, which are integral for backup power systems utilized in data centers and various critical infrastructure sectors.
Adam Wood, managing director for the power systems division of Rolls-Royce in America, stated in a Tuesday press release, “The increased investment strengthens our ability to serve our U.S. customers — especially in the fast-growing American data center industry.”
The expansion is projected to create approximately 60 new jobs, enhance production capabilities, and bolster Rolls-Royce’s industrial footprint in the U.S.
This development signifies Rolls-Royce’s strategic transition to encompass energy and power systems, moving beyond its traditional aerospace sector.
“We are proud to support America’s growing demand for reliable, domestically made energy systems that strengthen our nation’s energy independence and security,” remarked Adam Riddle, CEO of Rolls-Royce North America.
This announcement marks the second significant development for Rolls-Royce within a span of two days.
As part of this partnership, it is anticipated that Rolls-Royce could export up to six small modular reactors to the Czech Republic.
With this expansion, the South Carolina facility is poised to evolve into a key hub for Rolls-Royce’s North American power systems strategy. The first phase of the development is set to commence in the first quarter of 2026, with production anticipated to begin by July 2027.
