Clients of American Express are experiencing delays in cross-border payments and wire transfers following the company’s announcement of a comprehensive system upgrade linked to updates from the Federal Reserve. This development has ignited speculation about the potential integration of Ripple’s technology into American Express operations.

Notable Points:

The system upgrade by Amex has fueled rumors regarding the integration of Ripple’s technology.

The timing of Amex’s extensive card refresh and new cryptocurrency rewards in partnership with Coinbase has intensified discussions around XRP adoption.

Despite the increased chatter, XRP has seen only a minor increase in its price.

Although American Express has shared limited technical information, the communication has rekindled discussions about a possible deeper partnership with Ripple, especially considering their previous collaboration on solutions for cross-border payments.

Crypto analysts, such as Versan from Black Swan Capitalist, have highlighted the timing of Amex’s upgrades and its existing relationship with Ripple as key indicators of a prospective deeper integration.

American Express’ Largest Card Overhaul

Speculation surrounding Ripple intensified with the recent introduction of Amex’s “largest investment ever” in a card refresh this month.

This overhaul includes enhancements to both its US Consumer and Business Platinum Cards, with an emphasis on improving rewards, spending flexibility, and tailored services aimed at meeting the changing needs of customers.

This announcement closely followed a new partnership with Coinbase, which introduced the Coinbase One Card, featuring up to 4% Bitcoin back on purchases, coupled with unique perks from American Express.

The intersection of these developments—including a significant system upgrade, payment delays linked to Federal Reserve adjustments, and the new crypto rewards program with Coinbase—has heightened theories that American Express may be preparing to implement Ripple’s XRP-powered solutions.

While American Express has not confirmed any involvement with Ripple, proponents of blockchain technology argue that the company’s historical partnership with Ripple positions it favorably for the integration of RippleNet, which offers rapid and cost-effective cross-border settlement solutions.

Versan commented, “Payment infrastructure is being modernized, and American Express is a known Ripple partner.”

As speculation mounts, Ripple’s XRP has recorded only a modest gain of about 1% over the past 24 hours, trading at $2.20 at the time of this report.

Ripple and SEC Make Progress on Long-Standing Case

Recently, Ripple CEO Garlinghouse announced that the company is withdrawing its cross-appeal against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Garlinghouse stated, “Ripple is dropping our cross-appeal, and the SEC is expected to drop their appeal, as they’ve previously said.”

This announcement came shortly after a US district court dismissed a joint request from Ripple and the SEC seeking a ruling to lessen Ripple’s $125 million civil penalty and to counter the designation of Ripple’s institutional XRP sales as securities transactions.

Judge Analisa Torres noted that Ripple’s inclination to “push the boundaries” of the prior summary judgment suggested a likelihood of additional violations.

Ripple’s chief legal officer, Stuart Alderoty, commented on the court’s decision, indicating that Ripple faced two choices: to either withdraw its appeal or continue contesting the finding.

Alderoty affirmed that, regardless of the chosen path, “XRP’s legal status as not a security remains unchanged,” emphasizing that Ripple’s operations would continue unaffected.
