Devastating floods that struck Central Texas over the July 4 weekend have resulted in more than one hundred fatalities, according to current reports. AccuWeather estimates the overall damage and economic impact could reach between $18 and $22 billion.
As search and rescue operations persist, various organizations are stepping up to facilitate relief efforts and are accepting donations to aid the affected communities.
Crypto Donations Through The Giving Block and Crypto For Charity
Notably, both The Giving Block and Crypto For Charity are enabling cryptocurrency donations to support these relief initiatives.
Benjamin Pousty, the chief operating officer of The Giving Block, informed Finance Newso that several nonprofit organizations associated with them are presently active in Central Texas, delivering essential support to the flood-affected communities.
“Organizations such as World Central Kitchen, Direct Relief, and World Vision are on the ground helping those in need,” Pousty stated.
Pousty highlighted that contributors can donate cryptocurrency through The Giving Block’s Texas Flood Emergency Response Fundraiser page. He emphasized that donations can be made easily via cryptocurrency, stock, donor advised funds (DAF), or credit card, directed towards specific organizations using The Giving Block’s donation forms.
“The funds raised are being directed to support the crucial disaster relief efforts that these organizations are undertaking. Furthermore, all donations collected will be matched 1:1 until July 31, effectively doubling their impact,” Pousty added.

Additionally, Crypto For Charity is facilitating crypto donations for local Texas organizations.
Austin Pets Alive, an animal shelter, has been rescuing hundreds of animals stranded in the flood-affected areas and is now accepting crypto donations for their relief efforts, which can be made through the Crypto for Charity platform.

Aim to Raise $1 Million for Flood Relief
The Giving Block’s initiative launched on July 7 with an ambitious target of raising $1 million. Pousty noted that they had already surpassed the halfway mark, accumulating over $525,000 at the time of the report.
“What makes this effort particularly impactful is the $500,000 donation match that was pledged by Jared Isaacman, executive chairman of Shift4, which is The Giving Block’s parent company. This situation exemplifies the potential of crypto philanthropy to quickly mobilize resources and amplify generosity,” Pousty explained.
Regarding the cryptocurrencies being used for donations, Pousty mentioned that Ethereum (ETH) has attracted the highest number of contributions, closely followed by Bitcoin (BTC). The rise in the value of Bitcoin to a new all-time high is also an encouraging factor.
“These currencies are favored by donors on our platform due to their liquidity and widespread recognition, making them ideal for urgent contributions,” he added.
Growth in Crypto Donations
The acceptance of cryptocurrency donations for disaster relief is increasingly common.
Recent studies from Nonprofit Pro revealed that approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrency donations were made globally last year. This growth is largely driven by increased interest from donors in cryptocurrency, along with a growing number of nonprofits willing to accept digital assets.
Additionally, The Giving Block’s findings indicate that 70% of Forbes’ Top 100 charities now accept crypto donations, marking a 25% increase since 2024. The average donation amount in 2024 was reported at $10,978.28, which represents a staggering increase of 386% from the previous year.

Texas has recently introduced a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR), further highlighting the state’s openness to cryptocurrency, which may encourage organizations participating in relief efforts to embrace crypto donations.
Advantages of Cryptocurrency Giving
Moreover, the benefits of donating in cryptocurrency cannot be overlooked. Pousty asserts that crypto donations are particularly advantageous because they enable swift, borderless support during crises.
“These donations allow individuals worldwide to contribute immediately to relief efforts, which is essential in the wake of disasters like the Texas floods,” he noted.
Jacob Ortiz Hansen, CEO of Web3 finance company KyneSys Labs, shared similar sentiments with Finance Newso, noting that crypto donations ensure speed, transparency, and international access to support—critical factors in disaster situations where rapid response and trust are paramount.
“Traditional systems face delays due to banking hours, approval processes, and international transfer limitations. Cryptocurrency eliminates these barriers,” Ortiz Hansen stated.
To illustrate this, KyneSys Labs is working on a project named ‘Demos,’ which is currently in the testing phase. Ortiz Hansen mentioned that Demos will incorporate a smart routing capability across various blockchain networks.
“Demos Pay will enable recipients to accept any crypto token from any chain, facilitating instant conversion into a preferred stablecoin or on-chain format,” he explained. “For instance, a shelter in Texas could receive ETH, SOL, USDC, or MATIC and utilize these funds immediately, without concerns over chain compatibility.”
Pousty also highlighted that there are significant tax advantages associated with crypto donations for donors. Nonprofit organizations that accept such donations stand to benefit as well, as this fundraising avenue can substantially increase their impact.
“Crypto donations come with access to a young, generous donor base and can bring in larger contributions, especially during emergency campaigns like this one,” he pointed out.
The Outlook for Crypto Donations
While the concept of cryptocurrency donations remains relatively new, Pousty is optimistic that participation will continue to grow.
“The Giving Block has witnessed record levels of crypto donations for the numerous charitable organizations we partner with over the past year, and 2025 is shaping up to be our most pivotal year yet,” he stated.
Even so, there are various factors that could influence the future of crypto donations. According to The Giving Block’s 2025 crypto philanthropy report, external elements such as market dynamics and regulatory changes will play a significant role.
The report remarked: “While factors like market performance and economic conditions are out of our control, nonprofits can proactively work to enhance their digital presence, refine their outreach strategies, and improve the donor experience.”
Pousty remains hopeful, emphasizing that with Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high and recent funding and staffing reductions at organizations, crypto donations present a valuable and innovative method for fundraising.
