The recent meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was markedly overshadowed by Trump’s ongoing conflict with Elon Musk. Nevertheless, analysts are characterizing the encounter as a positive development for Merz.
“Being sidelined is not necessarily a bad thing,” noted Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro at ING, speaking to Finance Newso. “In fact, it might have even helped Merz as the Musk distraction also diverted attention from potentially contentious issues.”
This meeting was particularly crucial for Merz, who is still in the early days of his chancellorship. Given the scrutiny that other leaders have faced during their Oval Office visits recently, Merz is likely pleased with the outcome, especially considering the potential challenges that could have arisen.
A full agenda
Merz arrived in Washington with an extensive agenda, aiming to strengthen U.S.-German relations, discuss tariffs that could impact vital German industries, advocate for continued U.S. support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, and address NATO defense spending.
While specific details of their discussions remain undisclosed, it appears Merz successfully tackled most of these issues with Trump, as indicated by political strategist Julius van de Laar during a segment on Finance Newso’s “Squawk Box Europe.”
Van de Laar emphasized that Merz made a significant point about the necessity of U.S. support for Ukraine, especially as tensions have escalated in recent weeks. Merz was able to connect this issue to the anniversary of D-Day, highlighting the historical role of the U.S. in liberating Europe from the Nazi regime. He expressed hope that Trump would reaffirm U.S. engagement in helping Europe resist authoritarianism.
Furthermore, according to Jackson Janes, senior resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund, Merz’s gesture of presenting Trump with his grandfather’s birth certificate underscored the personal ties between the U.S. and Germany. Janes noted the symbolic importance of this gesture, reminding Trump of his familial connections to Germany.
Moreover, Janes pointed out that Merz’s commitment to increasing Germany’s defense budget likely resonated well during their talks. Germany has recently amended its fiscal policies to permit greater defense spending, reflecting a priority for Merz’s administration. The chancellor has pledged to bolster the German military and has shown support for Trump’s initiative for NATO allies to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense.

The meeting seemingly sidestepped the contentious topic of Germany’s far-right party, the Alternative für Deutschland. Recent statements from officials in Trump’s administration have shown support for the party, which has been classified by German intelligence as a “proven right-wing extremist organization.” This prompted notable backlash from German politicians, including Merz, who cautioned against U.S. interference in Germany’s internal political matters.
Currently, the classification of the AfD remains in limbo as it faces legal challenges.
‘A home run’ for Merz
Overall, analysts characterize Merz’s visit as a resounding success. Julius van de Laar referred to it as “a home run or a hole in one,” underscoring its significance.
Brzeski from ING noted that the visit laid important groundwork for a positive relationship between the two leaders. “There seems to be some common ground between Trump and Merz, which could foster a more constructive relationship,” he stated.
Merz also received praise from Trump, who complimented his language skills and described him as “a very good man to deal with,” despite acknowledging the challenges of their discussions.
After the meeting, Merz expressed contentment, posting on social media that the atmosphere was “really good” and emphasizing their shared interests. “I feel that we can communicate anytime,” he remarked, according to a translation provided by Finance Newso.
The prospect of a subsequent meeting is on the horizon, as Merz indicated plans for Trump to visit Berlin in the near future, further strengthening their diplomatic ties.
