Elon Musk announced on Tuesday his intention to significantly reduce political donations in the coming years, indicating a notable shift from his previous role as a major backer of President Donald Trump’s campaign.

The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the leader of the government-cutting initiative DOGE, had previously invested over $250 million to support Trump’s bid for reelection.

During his participation in the Qatar Economic Forum, when questioned about his future spending in the political arena, Musk stated, “I think, in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future.”

He elaborated on his reasoning, confirming, “I think I’ve done enough,” although he did leave the door open for potential future contributions by saying, “Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it.”

At the same time, he added, “I do not currently see a reason.”

Musk’s comments are likely to be disappointing for Republicans seeking re-election in 2026. In addition to supporting Trump, Musk allocated over $19 million during the final weeks of the 2024 election cycle to assist in securing narrow Republican majorities in Congress.

His affiliated super PAC, America PAC, emerged as a significant external spender in a recent contentious election for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat, which ultimately determined the court’s ideological balance.

Reports indicate that Musk-backed groups contributed more than $13 million leading up to that election, although his chosen candidate was ultimately unsuccessful.

Since Trump’s election victory, Musk has been a prominent figure in Washington, frequently appearing alongside the president and becoming a public face for DOGE, an organization aimed at dramatically reducing the size of government operations.

However, this heightened visibility has affected Musk and his enterprises. His controversial actions and opinions—many expressed on his social media platform X—coupled with his considerable influence within the White House, have not resonated well with the general public, as evidenced by recent polls.

According to polling data, there has been a noticeable decline in public perception of Musk and his companies since January. This shift has coincided with a dip in Tesla’s market valuation over the past couple of months, though there are signs of a recent recovery in share prices. Additionally, Tesla’s physical locations have faced vandalism and arson incidents.

Musk had indicated earlier that he plans to redirect his attention back to his businesses, mentioning during Tesla’s recent earnings call that his involvement with DOGE would “significantly” decrease starting this month.

Recent reports suggest Musk has become less prominent on the political stage, as Politico highlighted, he appears to be stepping back from the public eye in Washington.

Nonetheless, sources close to Musk informed NBC News later Tuesday that this retreat should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from political influence. “Musk scaling back his public profile does not diminish his influence. I think it can actually sharpen it,” the advisor stated. They emphasized that Musk can still support causes and initiatives he believes in quietly, without provoking undue controversy. “These midterms will be about message discipline and a focus on the economy, not fights on X.”
