Polestar has announced a recall affecting over 27,800 of its Polestar 2 electric vehicles in the United States due to a potential malfunction in the rearview camera display. The issue may prevent the display from showing images when the vehicles are in reverse.
In a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Polestar indicated that 2021-2025 model year Polestar 2 vehicles could experience “visualization issues” with their rearview camera systems, displaying a “Camera is temporarily unavailable” alert.

NHTSA officials stated that a malfunctioning rearview camera display increases the risk of accidents. Polestar manufactured the vehicles potentially affected by this issue between July 2020 and late November of the previous year.

According to the recall document, the underlying cause is identified as a “synchronization error between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the Infotainment Head Unit (IHU),” along with a fault in the IHU’s video receiving hardware.
Owners of the impacted Polestar 2 vehicles can expect to receive notification letters regarding the recall on June 19, as confirmed by the NHTSA report.

To resolve the issue, Polestar plans to implement a software update, as detailed in the recall report.

This update aims to ensure a consistent high-speed signal connection between the PAC and IHU, preventing the signal from toggling on and off unnecessarily. Furthermore, if a synchronization error is detected, the system will now reset the IHU’s video signal receiving hardware instead of merely displaying an error message, according to the recall report.
