Representative Don Bacon, a moderate Republican from Nebraska, is reportedly set to announce his retirement from Congress.
The impending departure of Bacon opens the door for Democrats to potentially secure the House seat representing Omaha’s district.
In a pivotal election cycle where control of the House could hinge on just one or two seats, Democrats are keenly aware of the necessity to convert several Republican-held districts, including Nebraska’s 2nd District.
With Bacon stepping down, the Republican Party will lose the advantage of incumbency in this competitive area.
The announcement could take place as soon as next week, according to a report from NBC News on Friday night. Reports from NOTUS and Punchbowl News had already hinted at Bacon’s plans, which have not come as a surprise.
A spokesperson for Bacon was not available for comment when contacted by Finance Newso on Saturday morning.
Bacon’s district is considered a critical battleground within Nebraska, encompassing the majority of Omaha.
In the 2024 election, former Vice President Kamala Harris triumphed in Bacon’s district by a margin of nearly 5 percentage points, a notable shift, following former President Joe Biden, who gained a larger victory in 2020.
Bacon has also distinguished himself as one of the few Republicans in Congress to openly criticize former President Donald Trump.
