A prominent Republican senator announced on Tuesday his opposition to Ed Martin’s nomination as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, a decision that could jeopardize Martin’s prospects for Senate confirmation, as he was nominated by President Donald Trump.
Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina stated, “I’ve indicated to the White House I wouldn’t support his nomination.”
The senator expressed concern over Martin’s previous backing of criminal defendants associated with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. These cases were handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C., which came under scrutiny after Trump issued federal pardons for many defendants on his first day back in office in January.
Tillis’ stance is expected to undermine Martin’s chances of advancing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Tillis serves as a member and plays a crucial role in the nomination process.
