Senate Republicans are inching closer to a decisive vote on President Donald Trump’s extensive domestic policy legislation, with Majority Leader John Thune expressing confidence that a deal has been struck to advance the bill.
“I believe we do,” Thune responded when questioned by reporters about whether a consensus had been reached, following extensive negotiations and urgent addendums aimed at securing the support of skeptical GOP members for the monumental legislation.
Republican leadership has been tirelessly working around the clock in an effort to gather enough votes in the Senate to move the legislation forward.
Once passed by the Senate, the bill would return to the House for a final assessment of the Senate’s amendments.
During a grueling 24-hour period, senators participated in a record-setting vote-a-rama, debating numerous amendments to the proposed legislation.
Behind the scenes, GOP leaders have been in discussions with dissenters within their ranks who have expressed intentions to derail Trump’s ambitious bill.
Vice President JD Vance made an early appearance at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, highlighting the preparations for a potential tie-breaking vote if necessary.
As the ongoing discussions continued, Trump indicated on Tuesday that he may consider postponing the July 4 deadline he has previously underscored.
“I would think maybe July 4, but somewhere around there,” Trump remarked at the White House during a media encounter.
