In a federal court appearance on Friday, Luigi Mangione entered a plea of not guilty to charges of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
If found guilty in this federal case, Mangione could face the death penalty for the alleged murder of Thompson, who was shot and killed on a Manhattan street in December.
The 26-year-old graduate of the University of Pennsylvania is also facing charges related to the incident in New York state court.
Mangione is accused of taking Thompson’s life on December 4, as the CEO was arriving at the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor event that day.
Five days following the shooting, Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
In U.S. District Court in Manhattan, he is charged with murder involving a firearm, two counts of stalking, and a firearms-related offense.
