Attention travelers: The federal government is set to enforce Real ID requirements at airports across the United States beginning May 7. This mandate highlights the necessity for travelers to possess a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another form of approved identification, such as a passport, to navigate security checkpoints for domestic flights.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reports that approximately 81% of individuals approaching airport security already hold Real ID-compliant identification, though this figure varies by state.

In anticipation of the deadline, federal and state officials have been urging travelers to schedule appointments with their local motor vehicle departments to secure updated licenses and identification cards. However, many have found available appointment slots to be limited.

“Make your appointments now as quick as possible,” said John Essig, the TSA’s federal security director for New York City airports, during a recent press conference at LaGuardia Airport. “We certainly don’t want to hold up anyone without Real ID at the checkpoint,” he added.

Notably, reminders have been posted at U.S. airports for years regarding the application process for a Real ID. The deadline for compliance has faced multiple extensions over time. Adding to these efforts, TSA personnel have been distributing flyers containing QR codes for additional Real ID information at LaGuardia Airport.

In addition, airlines have taken proactive steps to apprise travelers of the new identification requirements through customer emails and other communication channels. For instance, Frontier Airlines features a prominent gray banner on its website detailing the Real ID regulations.

What is a Real ID?

A Real ID refers to a form of identification, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID card, that aligns with federal standards established following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, during which hijackers utilized state-issued IDs, sometimes fraudulently acquired.

In response, Congress enacted the Real ID Act in 2005, empowering the federal government to implement standards for state IDs. Initially slated for enforcement in 2008, the implementation has faced multiple delays, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Real ID-compliant cards are identifiable by a gold or black star, or, in California, a yellow bear, in the top right corner.

The Department of Homeland Security has emphasized that identification cards lacking these markings will not be accepted as valid forms of identity to board commercial flights.

Who needs to show it?

Can I bring another form of ID?

If obtaining a Real ID by the May 7 deadline proves challenging, there are alternative options available.

The TSA has stated that travelers may present a U.S. passport, a permanent resident card (commonly referred to as a green card), or a trusted traveler ID, such as a Global Entry card, among other accepted forms of identification.

Can I use the Real ID to travel internationally?

Travelers should note that while a Real ID cannot be used for international travel, an “enhanced ID” that meets Real ID standards may be utilized for trips to Mexico and Canada.

Is the deadline real?

The TSA insists that the May 7 deadline is enforceable, warning that travelers lacking a Real ID or accepted identification could encounter delays at security checkpoints due to prolonged identity verification processes.

These travelers may also face “additional screening and the risk of not being allowed to enter the security checkpoint,” the TSA noted in a recent news release dated Friday.

With this in mind, the agency advises arriving at least three hours before domestic flights for those without a Real ID or acceptable alternative.

“Identity verification is a lynchpin in security,” stated TSA spokesperson Carter Langston. “We will ensure that passengers are confirmed as being who they claim to be before they can proceed beyond the checkpoint,” he added.
