On Friday, President Donald Trump accused former FBI Director James Comey of effectively calling for his assassination, referencing a now-deleted post by Comey on social media that included the numbers “8647.”
In an interview with Finance Newso News, Trump stated, “He knew exactly what that meant,” referring to the significance attributed to the numbers amid a growing controversy. His remarks came shortly after the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service announced they were investigating Comey’s Instagram post, which had drawn criticism from Trump, his family, and other supporters.
“A child knows what that meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know … that meant ‘assassination,'” Trump asserted, emphasizing his belief in the clarity of Comey’s intentions. He added, “And it says it loud and clear.”
The president further remarked, “Our country’s become respected again, and all this, and he’s calling for the assassination of the president,” referring to a recent assassination attempt on him that narrowly missed.
Comey, who was dismissed as FBI director by Trump in May 2017, has denied any implication of threats in his Instagram post, which he described as a display of what he labeled a “shell formation.” In a response shared on social media, Comey explained, “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence.” He also expressed his opposition to violence and subsequently removed the post.
When Finance Newso News anchor Brett Baier pointed out Comey’s denial of any malicious intent, Trump retorted, “Well, he apologized ’cause he was hit.”
Addressing questions about potential consequences for Comey, Trump refrained from taking a definitive stand, mentioning that it would be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi to make that decision. He emphasized, “I think it’s a terrible thing,” reiterating his disdain for Comey by labeling him a “dirty cop,” but added he would defer to the authorities on any legal action.
