House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed hope on Sunday that former President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk can find common ground following their recent public disputes.

During an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week”, Johnson remarked, “There’s a lot of emotion involved in it, but it’s in the interest of the country for everybody to work together.”

Johnson noted he has not engaged with Musk regarding the GOP-sponsored “big, beautiful bill” since the previous Monday.

Last week, Musk vocally criticized the recently passed multitrillion-dollar spending package, labeling it a “disgusting abomination” that he claims would exacerbate federal deficits.

In response to Musk’s comments, Johnson dismissed the Tesla CEO’s critiques. “I didn’t go out to craft a piece of legislation to please the richest man in the world; what we’re trying to do is help hardworking Americans,” he stated.

The spending bill is currently under consideration in the Senate.

Musk’s outspoken opposition to the legislation sparked a public rift between him and Trump, which had previously been reported by Finance Newso.

Since their conflict, it has been reported that Trump and Musk have not communicated, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating on “Finance Newso Sunday Morning Futures” that Trump does not seem inclined to reach out.

During an interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, Trump confirmed he is not interested in mending his relationship with Musk, suggesting their divide may have lasting implications.

Previously, Musk was the most significant donor in the 2024 presidential election cycle and his super PAC contributed approximately $200 million to support Trump’s campaign.

In the midst of the backlash against the spending bill, Musk made headlines by threatening to “fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.”

Trump, however, warned Musk on Saturday that he would face “very serious consequences” should he fund Democratic candidates that challenge Republicans backing the bill.

Johnson, a consistent ally of Trump, reinforced the president’s sentiments, cautioning that it would be a “big mistake” if Musk chose to support Democrats.
