On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Mike Waltz, the current National Security Advisor, as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been designated to assume the role of National Security Advisor until Waltz’s successor is appointed.
This declaration follows reports suggesting that Waltz would be stepping down due to escalating controversies linked to the establishment of a Signal messaging app chat thread, allegedly utilized by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to disclose U.S. military strategies.
Earlier, Trump had put forward Rep. Elise Stefanik from New York for the UN ambassador position. However, he rescinded her nomination in late March, citing the slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives as a factor in his decision.
“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
Trump praised Waltz for his dedication to national interests, noting, “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”
He further emphasized Rubio’s ongoing commitment, saying, “In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
