On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that a minimum tariff rate of 10% will be established for imports from countries negotiating trade agreements with the United States.
Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump stated, “Some will be much higher because they have massive trade surpluses and, in many cases, they didn’t treat us right.”
His remarks coincided with discussions surrounding a new trade agreement with the United Kingdom.
During the event in the Oval Office, Trump indicated through his Truth Social account that tariffs on UK imports will adhere to the baseline 10% set earlier this month for most nations.
When queried by a journalist if this tariff rate serves as a “template for these future trade deals,” Trump responded, “No, no.”
He characterized the agreement with the UK as favorable, noting, “That’s a low number; they made a good deal.”
Trump also expressed appreciation for the UK’s treatment of the U.S., adding, “One thing with U.K. … they always treated us with great respect.”
