Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, along with two other officials from the Trump administration, is set to engage in renewed trade discussions with their Chinese counterparts in London on Monday, as announced by President Donald Trump.
Trump expressed optimism about the meeting, stating on Truth Social, “The meeting should go very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In response to Trump’s announcement, Finance Newso reached out to the Chinese Embassy in Washington for further details; however, a spokesperson did not provide an immediate comment.
The president’s announcement follows a substantial phone conversation he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday regarding ongoing trade relations.
This meeting comes at a time when the U.S. and China are embroiled in a challenging trade war, marked by escalating disputes that endanger both nations’ economies.
Last year, the two countries’ total trade in goods exceeded $582 billion. Recently, both nations temporarily reduced most tariffs on each other’s goods following productive bilateral trade talks held in Geneva, Switzerland, last month.
Despite these developments, China has accused the U.S. of sabotaging this progress. Tensions heightened after the U.S. Commerce Department advised the chip industry against utilizing Chinese semiconductors. Additionally, China voiced its concerns over the recent decision by the Trump administration to revoke visas for certain Chinese students studying in the U.S.
