The United States has introduced potential peace plans aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. These proposals, which include an end to hostilities and the easing of sanctions on Moscow, were reported by Bloomberg News.
Details of the U.S. proposals were relayed in Paris on Thursday, as disclosed by European Union officials. French President Emmanuel Macron engaged in discussions with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff during these talks, as noted by the news outlet. Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and various national security advisors held conversations with foreign negotiators as part of the discussions.
As for economic sanctions, the proposal hints at Russia receiving some relief, but any reduction of restrictions imposed by the EU, including the unfreezing of assets, would necessitate unanimous approval from all member states, according to Bloomberg’s report.
However, EU officials clarified that this plan should not be seen as a conclusive settlement between the warring nations. They emphasized that European allies would continue to reject the notion of recognizing Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories as legitimate under Moscow’s governance.
Further discussions are expected with Ukrainian representatives about the specifics of the plan, as one official indicated that Russia must agree to halt its military actions, while Ukraine would require security assurances for the proposed peace framework to hold.
