Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church gathered for conclave on Thursday, culminating in the election of a new pope, as indicated by the white smoke rising from a chimney atop the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.

The specifics regarding the identity of the newly elected pontiff have yet to be disclosed, following what is believed to be the fifth ballot of the conclave.

The former pope, Francis, passed away on April 22 at the age of 88.

Cardinal Dominique Mamberti is anticipated to share the name of the new pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica later today.

This pope will assume the role as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

A sizable crowd has gathered in St. Peter’s Square, eagerly waiting for the announcement of the new pope’s name.
