In a significant move aimed at aiding recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, Verizon has joined forces with ForgiveCo to alleviate $10 million in consumer debt for over 6,500 residents of North Carolina affected by the disaster.
The initiative, introduced to support ongoing recovery from the powerful storm that struck in September 2024, allows for direct relief to those facing financial challenges in the impacted regions.
ForgiveCo’s program, termed “random acts of kindness,” has acquired various debts—including medical and essential financial obligations—without requiring any applications. Beneficiaries of this initiative were pleasantly surprised as they received notifications through letters, emails, and text messages.

Craig Antico, founder and CEO of ForgiveCo, expressed that “unpayable debt is a heavy burden that causes hardship for countless hardworking Americans.” He noted how unforeseen medical issues or accidents can make situations worse, particularly following a natural disaster. Antico emphasized that this initiative by Verizon is set to create substantial, positive changes in the lives of North Carolinians in crisis.
A press conference held at Verizon’s South Asheville location marked the announcement of the debt forgiveness, clarifying that no further action or application was necessary for the recipients to benefit from this relief effort.

This act of goodwill builds on Verizon’s earlier commitment of $400,000 to United Way of North Carolina to aid disaster recovery efforts post-storm.
Leigh Anne Lanier, Verizon’s president for the Atlantic South Market, remarked, “Verizon believes in the power of connection, not only through our technology but through the bonds we build with the communities we serve. To the 6,500 individuals impacted by this initiative and the broader Western North Carolina community, we are with you.” She emphasized Verizon’s ongoing commitment to act as a partner and neighbor in times of need.

Roy Williams, a Hall of Fame basketball coach and native of Asheville, participated in sharing this encouraging news with families affected by the hurricane.
He stated, “Verizon’s random acts of kindness will lift up thousands of North Carolinians who were left vulnerable due to Hurricane Helene’s devastation. These are challenging times, but I’ve seen the strength and resilience of this community. Verizon’s support serves as a powerful reminder that no one is alone, and together, we will rise stronger. It’s a privilege to convey this message of hope to the remarkable people of North Carolina.”
